There is magic in this memoir. March 20, 2010 Neros Ramazzotti (NYC) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I found the book in JFK last December with a hand written note from the author.Magic? Mistake? Lost? She spoke to me as if by fate. After reading her story framed in streaming conscienceness of poetry, pain and pleasure, I feel almost a kinship to this woman. I applaud her courage and creativity in getting the word out about abuse and rising from it. I look forward to more of her work.
A Phenomenal Read: The Other Side of Tuscany July 11, 2010 Meg 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I hear about Tuscany, I picture a lavish culture full of romance, exotic cuisine and a lush and leisurely lifestyle. The Other Side of Tuscany dives beneath the golden horizon into the complicated and intricate culture of Tuscany and its people, a place that may or may not be so appealing after all.
Author Nancy Stolfo-Corti takes us into a world that is deeply unknown, covered by the exotic nature of romance. What is it like to live and love in Tuscany, a place so deep of contradictions and ripples beneath the surface? A world shrouded in dark nature of relationships, and certainly for a woman, is uncovered piece by piece in this dramatic memoir.
As we follow Nancy's experiences as an American traveling to Italy and back to the US, we are led into stories of turmoil, independence, defiance, and acceptance. From the infidelity of her husband to raising two children in a foreign land, we walk with her through a range of emotions ending with forgiveness and acceptance.
Nancy's honest reflections of her life remind us that life is indeed messy, and that no matter what external or internal challenges or obstacles there may be, we can come out of these experiences transformed.
Written with exquisite poise, Nancy's language transports us into her life, but into our own lives as well, places that we may not have acknowledged or even seen before.
As a creative journaling facilitator, I have used The Other Side of Tuscany to illustrate the poignant use of setting and descriptions of imagery interweaved with the stirring emotional conflict.

Haunting, Moving, Honest, Real, Rich March 13, 2010 Anora McGaha (Raleigh, NC USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Other Side of Tuscany is a window into the fantastic, beautiful and difficult life of a remarkable woman who lived, and married, and left the mythical and romantic Tuscany. Keen inside views of the Italian culture, women among women, men among women. Delicate handling of themes such as sexual assault and domestic violence. Inspiration from the continual re-birthing of the protagonist, Nancy, making things beautiful, being of service, forgiving, restoring her hope and faith.
Nancy Stolfo-Corti's story line is one of boldly leaving her Italian American world in Dayton Ohio as a baker and seamstress' daughter, on a full scholarship to a fashion design school in London, then off to Italy to work, fall in love, marry and bear children. In time she moves back to America waiting for her husband to join her, a day that never comes. Living separate lives across the Atlantic from each other, visiting back and forth. Negotiating the loneliness, the disappointment, the anger and the lovers. Negotiating the force of jealousy, his, and her own complicated feelings, their complicated behaviors, and in time, paradoxical acceptance and forgiveness.
Fate would have it that I would get to be alongside the author, Nancy Stolfo-Corti, a coach to hold the vision of the completed journey, as it is quite the journey to complete a difficult memoir. I can attest to its truth, if seeing the suffering and joy that an author experiences in excavating her story, is evidence of the truth of the story.
The writing in The Other Side of Tuscany mirrors the author's life. Nancy's life has many parts and not all the pieces fit together well, cleanly, tightly. Experience that. Know what that feels like as a reader and imagine what that feels like in a person's life.
Those needing a linear walk through time from birth to now, with introductions and explanations, might not be comfortable in this book. Just as this author's life was not one straight line, neither is her book. Just as the author's life, whether as an Italian in America, or an American in Italy, was always between worlds, with so many twists and turns, so too The Other Side of Tuscany mirrors that experience.
As you read it, trust that when a new person is introduced or a new place shown, you'll come to know what you need to know as you turn the pages. Can you, as she had to, step forward not knowing what everything means, not knowing where the next steps will lead? Can you be curious about the mystery that is her life, the magic and the near tragedies, the dangers and the miracles; cancers without cures that did not kill; deadly car accidents that did not take lives; a home near a serial killer's killing grounds, yet spared; a robbery at gunpoint with masked men, yet no lives taken or stolen?
For those interested in the lives of women, the intersections of cultures, the relationships between men and women, the inside experience within Italian culture, the elite world of European fashion, the complexities of sexual relations, in somma, powerful insights of a woman who is keenly intelligent in heart and mind and spirit and whose life cuts across the ancient Italian arts and the 21st century world of the internet, this book is full of gems.
